TORONTO, Ontario โ€” Toronto police are investigating an assault that occurred near the busy Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue intersection after a video circulated online showing an apparent attack. The incident prompted urgent warnings from Iranian dissident Salman Sima, who described the assault as part of a broader pattern of intimidation targeting opponents of Iranโ€™s Islamic Republic in Canada. Police and federal security agencies have not publicly confirmed any connection between the assault and terrorism.

Assault Reported, Investigation Underway

According to Sima, the assault occurred at the Yonge and Steeles intersection, a heavily trafficked area that straddles the Toronto and Vaughan boundary. The video, shared on social media, appears to show a physical confrontation. The Toronto Police Service has acknowledged awareness of the footage and is reviewing the incident. As of publication, police have not released details about suspects, injuries, or potential motives.

No official statement has characterized the incident as terrorism.

Activist Raises Alarm Over Targeted Violence

Sima, a prominent critic of Iranโ€™s ruling regime, said the attack should be viewed within a wider security context. โ€œAll authorities in Canada, including Toronto Police, the RCMP, and CSIS, must stay alert,โ€ Sima wrote in a public post. โ€œThe lives of Canadian opponents of the Islamic Republic in Toronto and across Canada are now in greater danger than ever.โ€

He asserted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, has activated sleeper cells in Canada to carry out violence and spread fear. Sima described the assault as terrorism, not a random act of violence.

IRGC Designation and Canadian Context

The IRGC is designated as a terrorist organization in Canada. The federal government has cited the groupโ€™s involvement in regional violence, human rights abuses, and support for extremist organizations. Canadian officials have previously stated that the designation allows for enhanced law enforcement and financial measures against the group and its affiliates.

Sima also referenced the 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, which was shot down by Iranian missiles shortly after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board, including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents. Canadian officials have formally concluded the shootdown was an unlawful act by Iranโ€™s military and have pursued accountability through diplomatic and legal channels.

Authorities Urge Caution Pending Facts

Neither the Toronto Police Service nor the RCMP has publicly linked the Yonge and Steeles assault to the IRGC, Hamas, or any organized terrorist activity. CSIS has not issued a public comment on the specific incident.

Security experts caution that while foreign interference and intimidation campaigns are a documented concern, individual incidents require careful investigation. They note that premature conclusions can complicate police work and inflame community tensions.

Jewish and Pro-Israel Communities Watch Closely

The incident has drawn attention among Jewish, pro-Israel, and Iranian Canadian communities, many of whom have expressed concern about transnational repression and the safety of dissidents. Community leaders have repeatedly urged authorities to take threats seriously while relying on verified facts.

Canadian Jewish organizations have long warned that extremism linked to Iran and its proxies poses risks beyond the Middle East, including to Jewish communities worldwide. They have supported strong enforcement of terrorism designations and closer monitoring of foreign-influenced networks.

Next Steps

Police are expected to release further information as the investigation progresses. Authorities encourage anyone with additional video or eyewitness accounts from the Yonge and Steeles area to contact Toronto Police.

As Canada continues to confront issues of foreign interference and political intimidation, the case underscores the importance of balancing vigilance with factual verification. For now, the incident remains under investigation, with officials urging the public to await confirmed findings.
