JERUSALEM — Iran’s leadership crisis deepened this week as reports emerged that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has emerged as the leading candidate to assume leadership of the Islamic Republic amid the escalating regional war with Israel.
The development comes as Israel continues its military campaign against Iranian regime targets under Operation Roaring Lion, while U.S. forces remain engaged in coordinated strikes under Operation Epic Fury.
Iran’s ruling Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader, has reportedly been meeting under extraordinary security conditions as Israeli strikes have targeted senior regime figures and military installations across the country.
Multiple regional and intelligence sources indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei, long considered influential within Iran’s clerical and Revolutionary Guard circles, has become the preferred successor within hardline factions of the regime.
If confirmed, the appointment would represent an unprecedented move toward dynastic succession within the Islamic Republic, a development likely to intensify internal tensions inside Iran’s political establishment.
Meanwhile, the conflict continues to expand beyond Iran’s borders.
On the Lebanese front, Israeli forces have significantly increased air and artillery strikes against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, targeting missile launch sites, weapons depots, and command infrastructure believed to be linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Israel Defense Forces said the operations are aimed at preventing Hezbollah from opening a full northern front while Iranian forces remain under pressure inside Iran itself.
Hezbollah has responded with rocket and drone attacks into northern Israel, though Israeli air defense systems have reportedly intercepted many of the incoming projectiles.
Israeli officials say the goal remains to neutralize Iran’s regional proxy network while continuing precision strikes against regime military assets.
Security analysts note that the combination of Iran’s leadership vacuum and expanding military pressure across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, the Gulf region, and Iranian territory, has created one of the most volatile geopolitical moments in the Middle East in decades.
With Iran having selected a new Supreme Leader while fighting a multi-front conflict, regional observers warn the coming days could determine whether the crisis stabilizes or escalates into a broader Middle East war.
