OTTAWA, ON — Pierre Poilievre marked Yom Ha’atzmaut with a strongly worded statement praising Israel’s resilience, democracy and historic significance as the Jewish state celebrated its 78th year of independence.

Poilievre, who serves as Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and head of the Conservative Party of Canada, released the message Wednesday, joining political leaders around the world recognizing the anniversary of Israel’s founding in 1948.

“78 years ago, a millennia-long dream was finally realized as the Jewish people could once again be free and independent with a state of their own,” Poilievre said.

The statement is likely to resonate strongly with pro-Israel audiences in Canada, where public debate over the Middle East has intensified since the October 7 attacks and the subsequent regional conflict.

Israel Described as Democratic Beacon

Poilievre characterized Israel as a democratic anchor in a volatile region.

“Since then, the state of Israel has remained a beacon of hope and democracy in the Middle East,” he said.

“Time and time again, the indomitable spirit of its people has defended those who sought its destruction.”

The remarks reflect a longstanding Conservative Party position emphasizing Israel’s security, democratic institutions and strategic importance as a Western ally.

Canada’s Conservatives have traditionally maintained a more explicitly pro-Israel orientation than some competing political parties, often stressing Israel’s right to self-defense and opposing efforts to isolate the country diplomatically.

Emphasis on Diversity and Achievement

Poilievre also highlighted Israel’s social diversity and economic success.

“In defiance of critics, Israel has become a home to people of all faiths and backgrounds,” he said.

“Together, they built one of the most economically vibrant and technologically advanced countries on earth.”

Israel is widely recognized for its global leadership in innovation, agriculture, cybersecurity, medicine and start-up entrepreneurship. Supporters frequently point to those achievements as evidence of the country’s ability to thrive despite repeated wars, terror attacks and geopolitical isolation.

For many Jewish communities in the Diaspora, Israel’s success story remains closely tied to broader themes of survival, revival and national self-determination.

Historical and Spiritual Continuity

Poilievre’s statement also referenced the long historical continuity of Jewish identity and connection to the land of Israel.

“As millions around the world celebrate the birth of the state of Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut, they do so with the knowledge that thousands of years from now, they will continue to practice the same religion, in the same language, on the same land as their ancestors.”

That language reflects a Zionist understanding of Israel not merely as a modern state, but as the national restoration of an ancient people in its ancestral homeland.

For pro-Israel readers, such recognition carries significance at a time when Jewish historical claims are increasingly challenged in political activism, academic spaces and online discourse.

Canadian Political Context

The statement comes amid continuing domestic debate over Canada’s Middle East posture, antisemitism and public demonstrations tied to the Gaza conflict.

Jewish communities across Canada have reported heightened security concerns and a rise in antisemitic incidents since late 2023. Political leaders have faced pressure to address hate crimes, campus tensions and foreign policy questions simultaneously.

Against that backdrop, Poilievre’s direct and celebratory message stands out as one of the clearest affirmations of Israel from a major Canadian political figure this year.

The Conservative leader concluded by extending greetings on behalf of the official opposition and his party.

“On behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I wish all those celebrating a Happy Independence Day.”

He ended the message with the Hebrew greeting: “Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach!”

Why It Matters

Statements from senior Western political leaders are closely watched in Israel and among Jewish communities worldwide, particularly during periods of war or diplomatic tension.

Supporters of Israel often view such messages as signals of continued legitimacy and solidarity, while critics sometimes interpret them through the lens of broader foreign policy disputes.

For many Canadian Jews celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, Poilievre’s remarks are likely to be welcomed as a public recognition of Israel’s democratic character, historic legitimacy and enduring place in the modern Jewish story.

As Israel marks 78 years since independence, the message from Ottawa reinforces that support for the Jewish state remains an active force in Canadian national politics.

  1. Any country that expels millions from their homes and occupies millions of others cannot be described as democratic. It is about time that Palestinian rights are recognized and a peace is established based on justice and equality.
