JERUSALEM, Israel โ€” Yad Vashem has announced plans to establish its first Holocaust Education Center outside Israel in Munich, Germany, marking a significant expansion of the World Holocaust Remembrance Center’s international educational efforts at a time of growing concern over Holocaust distortion, denial, and antisemitism.

The new center will be located at Karolinenplatz in central Munich and is expected to become a national platform for Holocaust education serving audiences throughout Germany and neighboring European countries. The decision follows an extensive nationwide evaluation process supported by the German government and involving detailed research, site visits, and consultations with local authorities and educational partners.

Historic Expansion of Holocaust Education

The planned Munich center represents a major milestone for Yad Vashem, which has spent decades developing educational programs, teacher training initiatives, and Holocaust remembrance activities worldwide.

The institution said Munich was selected because of its strategic location, educational infrastructure, accessibility, security considerations, and historical significance.

The city occupies a unique place in history as the birthplace of the Nazi Party, making it a particularly symbolic location for a center dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and education.

Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan said the project comes at a critical moment.

“As we move further from the era of living survivor testimony, historically grounded Holocaust education is more important than ever,” Dayan said.

“Through this Education Center, Yad Vashem will bring to Germany its unique educational approach at a critical juncture of growing Holocaust distortion, denial, and antisemitism.”

Dayan emphasized that the center’s location carries profound symbolic significance.

“The choice of Munich, the birthplace of the Nazi Party, carries deep symbolic significance and reflects the importance of confronting this history where it began,” he said.

Additional Educational Presence Planned in Leipzig

Alongside the Munich facility, Yad Vashem announced plans to establish an extension of the educational initiative in Leipzig, located in the eastern German state of Saxony.

The Leipzig site will feature interactive learning spaces and outreach programs designed to support educators and institutions throughout eastern Germany and neighboring countries.

Yad Vashem also plans to expand its longstanding partnership with North Rhine-Westphalia, one of Germany’s most populous states, creating a nationwide framework for Holocaust education cooperation.

According to the organization, these efforts are intended to ensure that the educational impact extends far beyond Bavaria and reaches audiences throughout Germany.

German Government Backs Initiative

The project has received strong support from German federal and state leaders.

Karin Prien said Holocaust education remains essential in contemporary Germany.

“The aim is to strengthen Holocaust education and remembrance, and to combat antisemitism across Germany and Europe,” Prien said.

“Knowledge of the past is essential to preventing such evil in the future. Many young people in Germany still know too little about the Shoah, the systematic murder of millions of Jews under National Socialism.”

Prien also praised Bavaria’s longstanding commitment to combating antisemitism and supporting Jewish life in Germany.

She noted that Yad Vashem’s educational methods place particular emphasis on the experiences and perspectives of Jewish victims, helping educators communicate Holocaust history more effectively through innovative teaching approaches.

According to the German government, pilot projects connected to the new center are already being funded to allow educational activities to begin before the facility officially opens.

Broad Political Support

The initiative has received support from multiple German administrations.

The concept was first discussed during a 2023 meeting between Dani Dayan and then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Since then, the project has been endorsed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Education Minister Karin Prien, and leaders from several German states.

Kai Diekmann described the announcement as evidence of the strong relationship between Germany and Yad Vashem.

“We are delighted by the decision to open Yad Vashem’s new Education Center in Germany,” Diekmann said. “This reflects the deep trust between Yad Vashem and Germany and builds on many years of successful collaboration.”

Preserving Memory for Future Generations

Yad Vashem currently maintains educational agreements with all 16 German federal states and has trained thousands of teachers, students, civic leaders, and professionals throughout the country. The new center is intended to deepen those efforts and create a permanent institutional presence dedicated to Holocaust education in Europe.

The organization said the center will focus on its distinctive educational philosophy, which places Jewish victims and survivors at the center of Holocaust teaching. Through historical documentation, educational programming, and professional training, Yad Vashem aims to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust remain relevant for future generations.

The Munich center is expected to open within the next three years and will become a major new component of international efforts to preserve Holocaust memory and confront antisemitism at a time when both misinformation and hostility toward Jewish communities continue to rise across parts of Europe.
