Jewish Advocacy Group Releases Investigation Into Funding Behind Campaigns Targeting Jewish Institutions

Unapologetically Jewish says its months-long investigation examined charity oversight, advocacy networks and funding relationships connected to campaigns targeting Jewish and pro-Israel organizations across Canada.

OTTAWA, Ontario โ€“ Unapologetically Jewish has released the findings of a months-long investigation into Canadian charity oversight, advocacy organizations and funding relationships that the Jewish advocacy group alleges are connected to coordinated campaigns targeting Jewish institutions and organizations supportive of Israel.

Founder and executive director Matthew Taub presented the findings Wednesday at a news conference in Ottawa. The Press Gallery independently listed the event, and CPAC recorded it.

The investigation focuses heavily on Just Peace Advocates, or JPA, an organization involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy and campaigns challenging Canadian charities over alleged activities connected to Israel.

Unapologetically Jewish alleges that repeated campaigns have gone beyond criticism of Israeli government policy and have targeted synagogues, Jewish schools, summer camps, charities, foundations and other institutions forming part of Jewish communal life in Canada.

The allegations come from Unapologetically Jewish. They are not findings by a court, police service, the Canada Revenue Agency or another government regulator.

CPAC described the news conference as the release of findings from an investigation into “Canadian charity oversight, advocacy networks, organizational relationships and funding connected to campaigns that he says target Israel and Jewish organizations.”

More Than 100 Jewish Institutions

According to material released by Unapologetically Jewish, its investigation examined a list JPA published in August containing 143 Canadian organizations.

Unapologetically Jewish says its analysis found 108 of those organizations, approximately 76 percent, were Jewish community institutions. The group says the list included 15 Jewish day schools and seven children’s summer camps, as well as synagogues and other communal organizations.

The remaining organizations included Israeli universities and Canadian affiliates, Christian organizations supportive of Israel and other entities, according to the advocacy group’s account. It also says the group named nine private Jewish families and foundations.

TheJ.ca has not independently verified the group’s classification of all 143 organizations.

Taub argued that the nature of the targeted organizations deserves greater scrutiny.

“When you target a Jewish summer camp, you’re not targeting Benjamin Netanyahu. When you target a Jewish school, you’re not targeting the Israeli government,” Taub said in material released with the investigation. “When you target a synagogue, you’re not targeting the IDF. You’re targeting Jewish life in Canada.”

Unapologetically Jewish says the August campaign was not an isolated effort.

The organization alleges it was the fifth such campaign since 2021 and points to previous complaints filed with the Canada Revenue Agency concerning more than 100 Canadian charities.

Questions About Funding And Organizational Relationships

The investigation also examines JPA’s relationships with other advocacy organizations.

Unapologetically Jewish says JPA describes itself as fiscally sponsored by Nonviolence International, a U.S.-based organization.

The advocacy group examined publicly available U.S. tax filings and organizational records to trace financial and governance relationships among organizations involved in campaigns concerning Israel and Canadian Jewish institutions.

Among the relationships Unapologetically Jewish highlights is JPA founding director Jonathan Kuttab’s role with Nonviolence International and his connection to Al-Haq.

The organization argues that these relationships warrant further examination by Canadian authorities.

Organizational relationships alone do not establish wrongdoing, and the financial and organizational conclusions presented by Unapologetically Jewish have not been independently adjudicated.

Calls For CRA And RCMP Examination

Unapologetically Jewish says it has submitted material asking the Canada Revenue Agency to examine charities it alleges have provided funding connected to JPA and to review the status of Nonviolence International Canada.

The organization is also asking the RCMP to assess questions involving foreign organizational relationships raised by its investigation.

Those submissions should not be confused with findings by either agency.

No publicly announced CRA or RCMP determination establishes that the organizations discussed by Unapologetically Jewish violated Canadian law.

“Canadians deserve confidence that government institutions apply the law impartially,” Taub said. “If the system is working impartially, Canadians deserve evidence of that. If it isn’t, Canadians deserve to know why and they deserve it fixed.”

The investigation also raises broader questions about how federal regulators receive and handle complaints against Jewish charities.

Unapologetically Jewish is calling for parliamentary scrutiny of those processes, arguing that Canadians should be able to determine whether regulatory mechanisms are being used appropriately or strategically as part of political advocacy campaigns.

Advocacy Investigation, Not Government Finding

The distinction between the organization’s investigation and an official investigation remains central to the story.

Unapologetically Jewish conducted the research itself. Its findings represent allegations and analysis assembled by an advocacy organization with an explicitly stated mission of combating antisemitism and defending Jewish rights.

The Parliamentary Press Gallery’s publication of the media advisory confirms that the news conference was scheduled and held in its facilities. It does not constitute parliamentary endorsement of the report or its conclusions.

Similarly, CPAC’s recording of the September 16 news conference documents what Taub and his organization presented. It does not independently validate the allegations.

Any organizations named in the investigation should have an opportunity to respond to its specific allegations, and the underlying financial, regulatory, and organizational claims require independent verification.

What is now public is considerably more substantial than the media advisory issued September 15.

A planned announcement about a seven-month investigation has become a set of allegations concerning campaigns against more than 100 Jewish institutions, questions about organizational and financial relationships, and formal requests for Canadian authorities to examine the issues raised.

Whether those allegations ultimately produce regulatory, parliamentary, or law-enforcement action remains to be determined.
