Antisemitic Abuse In Muswell Hill Sparks Outrage Among Jewish Residents

Jewish mother and daughter confronted with slurs during peaceful yellow ribbon display for hostages

LONDON, UK – A Jewish mother and her daughter walking in Muswell Hill, north London, were subjected to a barrage of antisemitic insults including โ€œJews deserve to dieโ€ and โ€œyou are all filth,โ€ after encountering a group targeting yellow ribbons put up to remember hostages held in Gaza, local residents report.

The mother approached to offer peace through adding ribbons bearing images of Palestinian hostages alongside the Jewish ones. She said, โ€œThey laughed in my face. They said they did not want peace with โ€˜Jews.โ€™โ€ According to her account, the group, many wearing keffiyehs, shouted โ€œmurdering bitch,โ€ called her โ€œcomplicit in genocide,โ€ and declared, โ€œno one wants to exist with Jews.โ€

Local Jewish security group Shomrim warns that such incidents are symptomatic of a growing wave of antisemitic abuse in the city. They note that following the October 2023 Gaza conflict, hate crime reports in London reached record highs. Thousands of incidents, ranging from verbal abuse to physical assault, have been documented across the UK.

Community leaders denounced the Muswell Hill incident as โ€œan expression of mass hatredโ€ that cannot be dismissed as isolated. โ€œWhen someone says โ€˜Jews deserve to die,โ€™ and โ€˜you are all filth,โ€™ it stays with you,โ€ said a pro-Israel advocate. โ€œSuch hate is being legitimized, and now is the time to call it out.โ€

The Community Security Trust reported a 324 percent rise in antisemitic incidents in the immediate aftermath of the October 2023 attacks. That spike shows no sign of abating.

Jewish families in north London have faced vandalism, attacks, and intimidation. In one alarming case, a child was targeted with expletive-laden threats, and a bike-striker reportedly told them, โ€œI will kill you murderers.โ€

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a โ€œmassive increaseโ€ in antisemitic hate crimes since October 2023 and have since deployed extra officers to provide visible reassurance near synagogues and schools.

Amid rising concerns, Jewish families are adapting their daily routines. Some students are told to avoid uniforms, and public spaces once considered safe have become uncertain.

Muswell Hill residents are now calling for stronger community protections. โ€œPublic spaces should be safe for everyone,โ€ said one advocate, urging local authorities to take firm action against threatening or hateful displays rooted in global conflicts.

Across the UK, Jewish advocacy groups urge the government to confront antisemitism in all forms. โ€œHate cannot be allowed to thrive under the guise of political expression,โ€ said another community spokesperson.
